Modular Buildings for Ukraine’s Energy Sector: 7 Applications

Today, restoring Ukraine’s energy infrastructure requires not only new power generation equipment but also modular technical facilities to house and maintain it.
According to the Fifth Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA5), conducted jointly by the Government of Ukraine, the World Bank, the European Commission, and the United Nations, the number of damaged or destroyed energy facilities increased by approximately 21% compared with the previous assessment. The damage affects electricity generation, transmission and distribution, as well as district heating. At the same time, Ukraine is developing distributed power generation. According to the government, more than 1 GW of cogeneration capacity had been connected to the energy system as of February 2026.
These conditions are increasing the need for rapidly deployable technical infrastructure, including facilities for electrical equipment, server rooms, battery storage systems, generator units, control rooms, and maintenance teams.
Modular construction makes it possible to manufacture these facilities in a controlled production environment, adapting their structure, layout, and engineering systems to specific technical requirements. Quick-assembly construction also enables infrastructure to be deployed rapidly on-site, helps avoid concentrating critical facilities in a single location, and allows them to be relocated when necessary.
Let’s explore seven applications of modular buildings in the energy sector.
1. Technical Modules for Electrical Substations
Electrical substations require specialized facilities to house switchgear, relay protection systems, automation equipment, control panels, and other electrical equipment. These applications can be served by fully welded modules or multi-section complexes with separate functional zones.
The design takes into account equipment dimensions, cable entries, microclimate requirements, electrical safety, ventilation, and access for maintenance.
Modular technology helps protect equipment from moisture and temperature fluctuations through the use of insulated sandwich panels, supporting reliable operation.
2. Modular Control Rooms, Dispatch Centers, and Server Rooms
Energy facilities require dedicated spaces where operators can work and server equipment, communication systems, and automated control systems can be installed. At the same time, this equipment must be protected from dust, moisture, and temperature fluctuations. A connection to a backup power source must also be provided.
Depending on the technical specification, a module can include a workspace, a server room, air conditioning, ventilation, power supply, and backup systems.
Particular attention is paid to equipment heat output, cable routing, safety, and access for servicing engineering systems. One example is the modular server room manufactured by XMODULE.
3. Modules for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are used to store electricity, manage loads, and support power supply stability. Housing battery units and associated equipment requires specialized, quickly deployable metal structures designed around the specifications of the particular system.
The design must account for temperature control, ventilation, fire safety, cable connections, and equipment access.
One example is the XMODULE battery module, featuring four container-style doors, PIR insulation around the perimeter, and a split-system air conditioner. This configuration provides access to batteries and technical systems from both sides. The air conditioning system maintains the required temperature and helps prevent equipment overheating.
4. Modular Buildings for Generators and Cogeneration Units
The growth of distributed generation is increasing demand for facilities housing generators, gas-engine units, and cogeneration equipment. These modules are designed to accommodate the dimensions, weight, and operating requirements of the installation.
Their main purpose is to enable rapid deployment of backup power sources or cogeneration units while protecting equipment from weather, noise, and mechanical damage. Particular attention must be paid to air intake and exhaust systems. Equipment must also remain easily accessible so that units can be replaced when necessary without dismantling the structure.
Modular structures with reinforced metal frames are designed around the dimensions and weight of the generator or cogeneration unit. They can incorporate ventilation for exhaust removal, fuel supply systems, and other engineering utilities. Doors or removable panels provide access for equipment installation and replacement.
An important advantage of the modular approach is the ability to coordinate the building design with the equipment supplier’s technical requirements in advance and prepare the structure for installation at the site.
5. Mobile Bases for Maintenance and Emergency Response Teams
When repairing and maintaining power grids, pipelines, industrial installations, and other infrastructure, field teams need properly equipped facilities at their work locations. Modular buildings can serve as mobile maintenance bases, workshops, engineering team facilities, or equipment storage units.
Depending on the task, the solution may be a standalone module on a chassis or a small complex with a workspace, rest area, storage room, and sanitary facilities. Examples include a mobile welding station and a mobile staff facility on a chassis.
6. Sanitary and Staff Facilities
Remote industrial, energy, and construction sites need to provide employees with suitable working conditions. Quick-assembly construction makes it possible to establish changing rooms, sanitary facilities, rest areas, canteens, and administrative spaces.
XMODULE works with industrial companies and has experience delivering modular accommodation complexes and staff facilities. Their layouts can be adapted to the number of employees, work schedules, and required engineering systems.
7. Modular Warehouses, Workshops, and Security Posts
Industrial enterprises and infrastructure facilities need additional space to store tools, spare parts, consumables, and equipment. Workshops for maintenance and repair, as well as security posts for access control, are also often required nearby.
Examples of such XMODULE facilities include a modular warehouse with shelving and a modular checkpoint for an industrial facility. These structures support inventory and equipment storage, minor maintenance work, and perimeter security at industrial and infrastructure sites.
What Should Be Considered When Designing a Technical Module?
Unlike standard staff facilities, technical modular buildings must be designed around the equipment and technological processes they will accommodate. When preparing the technical specification, it is important to define:
-
Purpose of the facility: the equipment to be housed or the processes to be carried out inside.
-
Dimensions and loads: equipment size and weight, as well as floor and load-bearing structure requirements.
-
Engineering systems: power supply, ventilation, air conditioning, heating, and other required utilities.
-
Operating conditions: temperature, humidity, site characteristics, and safety requirements.
-
Maintenance access: access to equipment and the ability to repair, dismantle, or replace it.
-
Logistics and installation: transport restrictions, site preparation, installation and connection methods, and backup power requirements.
Once all parameters have been agreed upon, XMODULE’s structural engineering team develops the module design. Manufacturing typically takes 1–2 months.
